(A) ALGEBRA II
The intent of this course is to provide the students with the skills necessary to succeed in and to progress in the advanced study of mathematics. Topics appropriate to Algebra II will be presented, advanced topics will be introduced, and reinforcement of advanced skills in Algebra will be emphasized. The use of a graphing calculators and real-world applications will be integrated into this course. Students must be willing to commit to the rigor of the coursework. Standards required by the state of Arkansas and the College Board will be emphasized.
COURSE MATERIALS:
HOMEWORK POLICY:
- Homework will be collected daily and given a grade ranging from 0 to 5 based on the amount of work completed and the quality of the work.
- Homework is due the following school day at the beginning of the period unless otherwise specified.
- Late assignments will not be accepted without penalty.
- No homework or make-up work will be accepted after test day.
- Because homework is not an indicator of whether a student can remember a concept over the long range, it counts for only 20%.
ABSENCES/MAKE-UP WORK:
In the event of an absence, it is the responsibility of the student to find out what assignments were missed and also to pick up any handouts missed. All make-up work must be completed within 3 days of an absence; the only exception to this will be an extended illness. Students absent on a test date will be expected to report to the teacher on the first day back to make arrangements for testing/quizzing.
GRADING POLICY/ASSESSMENT
- Quizzes will be given periodically. Quizzes are administered for the purpose of showing the student what areas need to be reviewed and also to indicate what objectives have been mastered.
- Tests will be given at the end of each chapter.
- Tests, quizzes, and projects are 80% of the grade.
- Bonus points are available on tests by completing a bonus problem.
- A detailed progress report will be handed out three times a semester. The report must be returned on the due date and signed by a parent or guardian.
CLASSROOM RULES/EXPECTATIONS:
- Students should come to class ready to learn.
- Students are expected to be in their seats, with materials on their desk when the tardy bell rings. The lesson will begin with a daily journal problem.
- Students must work quietly and must be respectful of all people and property in the classroom.
- Tardiness to class will be documented: We will abide by the school tardy policy.
PERSONAL STATEMENT:
- Please come to class prepared to work.
- Solving problems involves asking questions and taking risks.
- Algebra must be practiced, discussed and shared with fellow students, and written about in order to learn it and internalize it.
- Good students seek help sooner rather than later.
- Get extra help when you need it. I am usually available after school 3:10 – 3:45 p.m. Monday through Thursday. I will be happy to arrange extra help sessions for anyone who needs help.
